QuakeRecNankai is a Belgian Science Policy Office (BELSPO BRAIN-be) funded project looking at records of past earthquakes and tsunamis in south central Japan. The project unites a consortium of international experts, including Belgian teams from the University of Ghent, the Geological Survey of Belgium (Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences) and the University of Liège, Japanese teams from the National Institute of Advanced Science and Technology (AIST) and the University of Tokyo and a German team from the University of Cologne.

The project combines fieldwork in coastal plain areas and lakes, advanced sedimentological and geochemical analyses, innovative dating techniques, tsunami inundation modelling and risk and hazard assessment, with government policy support and public outreach.
